The Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa is a national residence visa for non-EU citizens who earn stable income from outside Portugal and want to live in Portugal while working remotely.
It is specifically designed for:

The D8 is not a tourist visa and not a local work permit. It does not allow you to enter the Portuguese labour market or work for Portuguese employers as your main activity.
2. Two Different D8 Routes (Often Confused)
Portugal applies the D8 through two legally distinct pathways:
Route A — Temporary Stay Visa
- •Valid for up to 1 year
- •Intended for short‑term residence
- •Does not convert into a residence permit
- •No automatic renewal inside Portugal
Route B — Residence Visa (Most Common)
- Issued as a 4‑month entry visa
- Followed by a residence permit valid for 2 years
- Renewable for 3 additional years
- Leads to 5‑year legal residence and eligibility for permanent residence or citizenship

3. Income Requirements
Portugal calculates D8 income using a multiple of the Portuguese minimum monthly wage.

Weak Evidence (Should Not Stand Alone)
- Screenshots of platforms or dashboards
- Emails without contracts

6. Family Members (Dependants)
Dependants increase the financial expectation, but exact figures are not always formally published in D8 checklists.

- •Spouse: additional financial capacity expected
- •Children: additional funds expected
Because formulas vary by consulate, applicants should be conservative and exceed the base threshold when applying with family.
7. Can You Work for Portuguese Companies on D8?
The D8 visa is intended for income sourced outside Portugal.
Occasional or incidental activity is a grey area
Entering the Portuguese labour market generally requires a different legal route
D8 holders should not structure their income primarily around Portuguese clients.
8. Remote Work While on Tourist Status (Clarified)
Tourist or Schengen status does not grant the right to:
- ✗reside long‑term in Portugal
- ✗regularize long‑term remote work
While some people work remotely during short stays, long‑term residence requires the appropriate national visa (such as D8).
